Program Structure

Our program is divided into four levels of study:

  1. Herbalist Apprentice (1 semester)
  2. Herbalist (1 semester)
  3. Master Herbalist (2 semesters)
  4. Clinical Herbalist (2 semesters)

This program can be fully accomplished in three years. Each semester includes:

  • 55 hours of expert class instruction over six months
  • 150 hours of assignments, readings and projects
  • Hands-on experiential learning
  • Herb Walks and outdoor teaching (as weather permits)
  • Reviews & Tests

Curriculum

Level I: Herbalist Apprentice (1 semester)

  • Fundamentals of Herbalism I
  • Safety, efficacy, preparations, and more
  • Fundamentals of Herbalism II
  • Herbalism in the context of modern health care, both conventional and alternative
  • Herbal Actions & Body Systems I
  • Digestive, Circulatory, Nervous, etc.
  • Making Herbal Medicines
  • Materia Medica I
  • Introduction to Apothecary
  • Fundamentals of Nutrition
  • Plant Identification
  • Practical Skills for the Herbalist

Certificate of completion as Apprentice Herbalist is awarded upon successful completion

Level II: Herbalist (1 semester)

  • Herbal Actions & Body Systems II
  • Health Conditions
  • Materia Medica II
  • Apothecary
  • Advanced Nutrition
  • Self Healing Project
  • Client Assessment Skills I
  • Principles of Practice I

Certification as Herbalist is conferred upon successful completion

Level III: Master Herbalist (2 semesters)

  • Herbal Actions & Body Systems III
  • Health Conditions
  • Advanced Apothecary
  • Herbal Pharmacology
  • Herb/Drug Interactions
  • Client Assessment Skills II
  • Principles of Practice II
  • Career Development in Herbalism

Certification as Master Herbalist is conferred upon successful completion

Level IV: Clinical Herbalist (2 semesters)

  • Supervised Clinical Practicum
  • Clinical Apothecary
  • Advanced Topics & Current Issues

Certification as Clinical Herbalist is conferred upon successful completion
